Getting Around South Florida

Why Where You Live Matters More Than Ever

One of the first things every newcomer notices after moving to South Florida is the sunshine.

The second thing? Traffic.

Our region grew incredibly fast over the past decade. What used to be sleepy coastal towns are now full-time cities. More residents, more visitors, more businesses, but the road network didn’t expand at the same pace. A 9-mile trip can sometimes take 35 minutes. Crossing three bridges during season can turn a quick errand into a full afternoon.

And that reality is quietly reshaping how people choose where to live.

Instead of planning life around driving, buyers are now planning life around proximity.

We’re seeing the rise of what I call lifestyle micro-communities — neighborhoods where you can live, work, socialize, and relax all within a few blocks. Downtown Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Flagler Village, Las Olas, and parts of Pompano Beach are all evolving this way. Coffee shops, fitness studios, co-working spaces, restaurants, marinas, and nightlife all sit within walking or biking distance.

The goal isn’t to eliminate transportation.

It’s to only need it when you actually want to go somewhere.

But when you do want to move around South Florida, you have some very unique options, and many of which people relocating here don’t realize exist.

Brightline — Beating I-95 Without Touching It

The Brightline has arguably become the most important transportation development in South Florida in decades.

Instead of fighting I-95 traffic between Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton, and West Palm Beach, residents now simply bypass it.

You can leave Boca and be in Miami in roughly half an hour. No parking garages. No toll stress. No late-night drive home after an event.

Many locals now use it for:

  • Work meetings in Miami

  • Sporting events and concerts

  • Miami International Airport transfers

  • Nights out in Brickell or Wynwood

It’s the first time South Florida has truly felt connected as one region, and for many homeowners it directly affects where they choose to buy. Living near a station suddenly replaces a long commute with a simple train ride and a coffee.

The Boat — The Only Place Where Your Dock Is a Driveway

Here is something buyers don’t believe until they see it:

People in South Florida actually use their boats as transportation.

The Intracoastal Waterway connects multiple cities like a scenic boulevard. Waterfront restaurants, marinas, sandbars, and friends’ homes are accessible dock-to-dock. On weekends especially, a boat replaces the car.

For many waterfront homeowners, this becomes the biggest lifestyle change of all. You’re no longer planning around roads. You’re planning around tides and sunsets.

Water Taxis & Ferries — The Local Shortcut

Fort Lauderdale is often called the Venice of America — and not just because it looks nice on postcards.

You can genuinely get around the city by water.

The Water Taxi system runs through the canals and along the Intracoastal, connecting beaches, restaurants, Las Olas, and shopping areas. Many residents use it during season to avoid bridge traffic and parking.

There’s also the Hillsboro Inlet ferry, used daily by locals living on the barrier island. What feels like a novelty to visitors becomes a normal part of life to residents.

It’s transportation that feels like a vacation.

Helicopters & Private Air — Not Just Luxury, Efficiency

South Florida has a unique feature: a large number of executive airports — Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale Executive, and others — located directly inside residential areas.

Because of this, private aviation isn’t only about luxury. It’s about time.

Business owners frequently:

  • Fly to the Bahamas for the day

  • Travel across Florida without commercial terminals

  • Attend meetings in multiple cities in one day

Helicopter charters are also used for showings, special events, and quick regional travel. When the roads are full, the sky becomes the fastest route.

Walkability, Golf Carts & E-Bikes — The Real Future

This is actually the trend changing real estate the most.

Buyers increasingly want to:

  • Walk to dinner

  • Bike to coffee

  • Golf cart to the marina

  • Work remotely nearby

The ability to leave your car parked for days at a time has become a major selling point. It’s one of the reasons certain neighborhoods are appreciating faster than others — they offer convenience without sacrificing lifestyle.

People aren’t just buying a house anymore.

They’re buying a radius.

Why This Changes How You Should Choose a Home

In many cities, transportation is an afterthought once you buy a home.

In South Florida, it should be part of the decision from the beginning.

Traffic here isn’t going away — growth is part of what makes the region exciting. But smart buyers now plan around how they want to live daily life: walkable districts, near-train access, waterfront mobility, or airport proximity.

Because the real luxury in South Florida isn’t just the view.

It’s how easily you can enjoy it.
