The Fort Lauderdale Air Show is more than a weekend event. It is a reason to drop anchor, look up, and remember exactly why you chose to live on this stretch of coast.
There are weekends in South Florida that remind you exactly why you chose to live here — or why you are working hard to make it happen. This past weekend was one of those weekends. We took the boat out, found our spot on the water, and watched the sky above Fort Lauderdale Beach turn into something else entirely.
Jets roaring over the Atlantic while you are sitting on the back of a boat with a cold drink in hand? That is the kind of experience that simply does not have an equivalent.
A Show With Deep Roots
The Fort Lauderdale Air Show has been a fixture of this community for over a decade. What started as a coastal celebration of aviation and military service has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the South Florida calendar. Held every May along Fort Lauderdale Beach, the show draws elite military and civilian aerial performers to fly over the Atlantic for two full days of precision, power, and patriotism.
Fort Lauderdale's connection to military aviation runs deeper than most people realize. During World War II, the Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale served as a key military training ground. Its museum still stands today as a tribute to that legacy, including a memorial to Flight 19 — the 1945 training mission that vanished over the Bermuda Triangle and was never recovered. What you see in the sky during Air Show weekend carries that history with it.
"It makes you so happy to be here, so happy to be a part of it, so happy to be an American."
— Air Show attendee, NBC 6 South Florida
The View From the Boat
The beach gets the crowds. The boat gets the perspective.
Anchoring out during Air Show weekend is one of those Fort Lauderdale insider moves that separates locals from visitors. The aircraft fly over the Atlantic, which means the water is literally your front row. Unobstructed sightlines. The rumble you feel in your chest. A 360-degree view that no ticket in a VIP tent can replicate.
This is South Florida waterfront living at its best. And it is exactly the lifestyle that makes the corridor from Boca Raton to Fort Lauderdale one of the most desirable stretches of coastline in the country. It all shows up in a single weekend like this one.
Matthew Tkachuk Takes Flight
If you were following the news this weekend, you caught one of the best crossover moments South Florida sports has seen in a while. Panthers forward Matthew Tkachuk — two-time Stanley Cup champion, Olympic gold medalist, and one of the most electrifying players in the NHL right now — suited up for a very different kind of performance.
As part of the Air Force's Hometown Heroes program, Tkachuk flew in the backseat of a Thunderbirds F-16 Fighting Falcon with Lt. Col. Tyler "Wrath" Keener. His name was on the side of the jet. They hit 9.5 G's. At one point he had the controls, doing flip after flip over South Florida.
"It was one of the greatest experiences of my life."
— Matthew Tkachuk, Florida Panthers
The Thunderbirds toured the Panthers practice facility the day before the flight. Tkachuk brought his Olympic gold medal for the pilots to hold. When it was over, the crew gave him a pin for withstanding over 9 G-forces. The two groups talked about shared culture — preparation, reliance, precision, teamwork. Two championship-level operations doing what they do best, right here over our coastline.
Why It's Worth Putting on the Calendar
Air Show weekend in Fort Lauderdale is not just a spectator event. It is a full lifestyle weekend — and if you are already living along this stretch of coast, or you are thinking about it, this is one of those weekends that crystallizes everything.
Hotels fill up months in advance. Restaurants along A1A and the Intracoastal are packed from Friday through Sunday. Boat spots go fast. The economic pulse of this community shifts noticeably, and the city embraces every bit of it.
For those who live here, it is an annual ritual. For those looking to buy here, it is a preview of the kind of life this market delivers year-round. Events like this are why Fort Lauderdale consistently ranks among the most desirable coastal markets in the country — not just for the real estate, but for the culture and the community that comes with it.
South Florida has no shortage of things to do. But few events feel as uniquely ours as this one — jets over the Atlantic, boats on the water, a city that shows up for itself. That is the Selling Paradise way of life.
